Florence City Council July 22

July 22, 2025

All city council members and Mayor Aubuchon-Metzger were present.

Agenda numbers below match the agenda posted by the city.  The first four agenda points are not reported as they do not add content to this report.

AGENDA POINT 5 – Presentation by Florence Y’alls Baseball. This was largely promotion by the Florence Y’alls and stadium management. No financial estimates or cost analysis for the stadium and team were presented.

AGENDA POINT 6 – Presentation re: disability signage ordinance to authorize the city to post disability signs for anyone who applied for such signs under the American Disability Act. Passed 6-0.

AGENDA POINT 7 – Mayors Report
Christmas in July at the Aquatic Center
Car show August at the Church of Scientology
National Night Out August 5
No council meeting July 29 due to the date being the fifth Wednesday.

AGENDA POINT 8 – Other
Councilwoman Whalen mentioned she believed it’s time to address the insurance tax in the city and lower it.

Councilwoman Cable inquired about the foreclosure situation at 37 Goodridge Dr. City Attorney Nienaber stated he had called the father of property owner Burr J. Travis III but has not received an answer. Attorney Nienaber said he had planned to call again today but did not get around to the issue.

Naomi Liebson addressed the council and stressed the need for more shade on city park benches as well as the need for more benches. Ms. Liebson’s disability makes issues such as this very important to her.

Tonya Schmitz addressed the council about parking on Kathryn Avenue. Ms. Schmitz stated the room required for a driveway is five to seven feet and this is not being enforced on her street. Due to the lack of enforcement, Ms. Schmitz is having issues being able to safely back out of her driveway. Ms. Schmitz requests that city ordinances re: clearance for driveways and mailboxes be enforced. Poor enforcement of parking ordinances is a frequent complaint from residents.
