Censure of Senator Mitch McConnell

Censure of Senator Mitch McConnell

January 27, 2025

“The Secretary of Defense is a civilian position, appointed by the President with advice and consent of the Senate”

WHEREAS the War Department was established by an Act of Congress in 1789, AND

WHEREAS the Congress later consolidated the branches of the military under the Department of Defense by the National Security Act of 1947, with subsequent amendments and revisions, AND

WHEREAS the President, Donald J. Trump, nominated Peter Brian Hegseth, honorably discharged major in the United States Army, combat veteran, winner of numerous awards including two Bronze Stars, AND

WHEREAS the United States Senate voted on 24 January, 2025, to allow Mr. Hegseth to become Secretary of Defense, being duly sworn in on 25 January, 2025, AND

WHEREAS the vote in the Senate was 51-50 with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the deciding vote in favor of Mr. Hegseth, AND

WHEREAS the Senator from Kentucky, Addison Mitchell McConnell III, commonly referred to as Mitch McConnell, cast a no vote for Mr. Hegseth, knowing Mr. Hegseth was eminently qualified but casting the vote to show his disrespect for President Donald J. Trump, AND

WHEREAS, President Donald J. Trump won a decisive vote in both the electoral college and popular vote, thus having the right and privilege of forming his Cabinet from his nominees, AND

WHEREAS Senator Mitch McConnell by his actions on this vote and others in the past no longer represents the will of the people of Boone County, Kentucky, or the great State of Kentucky, AND

WHEREAS Senator Mitch McConnell was the only Republican member of Kentucky’s congressional delegation to oppose President Trump’s nominee, Peter Hegseth, AND

WHEREAS there is no excuse for any elected Republican to work with Democrats to undermine President Trump’s qualified Cabinet nominees, NOW THEREFORE

BE IT RESOLVED that the Boone County Republican Party hereby formally censures Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, calls for his resignation from the Rules Committee and shall cease all support of him as a Republican.

Adopted this 27th day of January 2025 at a regular meeting of the Boone County, Kentucky, Republican Party.
