Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection

While Memorial Day was created to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our nation, this week also provides an opportunity to reflect on the work of the House Veterans, Military Affairs, and Public Protection Committee. This committee’s jurisdiction includes military affairs; the Kentucky National Guard; military posts and bases; veterans’ nursing homes, cemeteries, rights, benefits, and education opportunities; and military memorials. Public protection responsibilities also include the state’s oversight of fire prevention and protection; and some public health and sanitation regulations.

This week the House passed HB 6, which includes major investments in mental health, substance abuse recovery, and programs serving the state’s most vulnerable, HB 1, an investment proposal, and other measures.

In addition to the state budget, we are also considering legislation that taps existing state resources to make significant one-time investments in infrastructure, public safety, and economic development, as well as paying down the state’s public pension liabilities. The measure, HB 1, is different from the budget because it only includes one-time spending.
